Mary Magdalene and Jesus: What Was Their Relationship?

The bond between Mary Magdalene and Jesus is one of the most quietly powerful relationships in the Gospels. It is not built on speculation or romance, despite what novels and films have invented over the years. It is built on something simpler and more sacred: a woman who was healed by Christ, who chose to follow him with her whole life, and who stayed near him when almost everyone else had gone.
A woman who stayed
Mary Magdalene appears throughout the Gospels as part of the small group of women who travelled with Jesus and supported his ministry. While the male disciples are named more often, the women are named at the moments that matter most. Mary Magdalene is named at the crucifixion, when most of the twelve had scattered. She is named at the burial, watching where his body was laid. She is named at the empty tomb, returning before sunrise to anoint a body she expected to find still wrapped in death.
Her devotion was not seasonal. It was costly. Standing at the cross was dangerous. Returning to the tomb in the dark was vulnerable. And yet she went. The bond between Mary Magdalene and Jesus is, first of all, the bond of a woman who would not leave.
The first to be greeted by name
In John 20, the risen Christ meets her in the garden. She does not recognise him at first, mistaking him for the gardener. Then he says one word — her name. Mary. And in that one word, everything changes. She turns. She knows him. She speaks back the most intimate name she has for him: Rabbouni, my teacher.
It is one of the most tender exchanges in scripture. The risen Christ's first word to a human being after the resurrection is the name of a woman. The first commission he gives is to her. She is the first preacher of the Easter gospel, sent by Christ himself with the words, Go to my brothers and tell them.
What this bond reveals about the heart of Christ
The bond between Mary Magdalene and Jesus reveals a Christ who is unafraid of the deep faith of women. He honoured her, trusted her, healed her, and entrusted her with the news that would launch the entire Christian church.
